History of the oratorio
Initially, the oratorio was performed in a church room, known as the oratorio - hence the name of the genre. The oratorio was conceived in opposition to the opera – there were two parts instead of three and it was performed on no-opera days. However, later the concept of the oratorio expanded considerably and the genre spread throughout Europe.
